Edward and Betty Sloat were immigrants to this country.  Edward, a Jewish immigrant from a small town in Lithuania or Poland, depending on the politics at any given moment, fled the anti-Semitic violence which followed World War I. Betty was a Catholic immigrant from Hungary.

The couple’s success in business in Cleveland was derived in large part from service to Jewish, Catholic, and Lutheran educational institutions in greater Cleveland. Mr. Sloat chose to establish The Edward and Betty Sloat Foundation to support initiatives by those three spiritual communities to assist children in need, especially through educational opportunities.

The Edward and Betty Sloat Foundation has been proud to support projects and schools funded through the Jewish Federation of Cleveland for the past 14 years. This permanently endowed fund will assist the Federation to serve educational needs of economically disadvantaged children in the future.
