My parents came from Austro-Hungary.  The Hand family has always been proud of our Judaism and grateful for the freedoms we enjoy in this country.  Frieda’s parents came from Russia and settled in Montreal, Canada.  Both Frieda and her father were dedicated educators.  Frieda taught in the Cleveland Public Schools until her retirement.

I have vivid childhood memories of my mother and father, no matter what our circumstances, helping poor, indigent Jews.  It is because of the example my parents set, the confidence I have in the future of the Jewish community, and in Frieda’s memory, that I leave this legacy.

It is my hope that this legacy will enable the generations to come to participate in a rich Jewish community filled with opportunities to nourish Jewish life through quality Jewish education, strong Jewish values, and assistance for those who are less able to help themselves.
